As I said in the previous note, we have worked on French recommandations about datasets's Metadata. The first issue was the gap between INSPIRE's rules and ISO 19115. Working under the French INSPIRE structure of coordination's umbrella (ie. the CNIG), with users from various public authorities and some very sharp experts (one was strongly involve in EC Technical guidelines), we tried build a bridge linking legal bank and standard's one.
We have produced recommandations towards software e... Read full post

The famous game of Sim City is definitely what is meant when we talk about land use planning. The GIS is a system for designing a real Sim City. This technique is hardly used in practice, because it includes a series of operations that affect professionals in land use planning. I have imposed in order to create a template to apply logic to the towns of Sim City, in line with several exercises that can be found on the web, refer to the most virtuous citizens, but also related to projects of vario... During a presentation in Edimburgh, I said that we were producing recommandations for spatial data managers to escape from traps of misunderstanding and I exposed a regret : it would be better to work with other State members but time is lacking. At least we will try to share it with the others stake holders, specially French speaking ones. So I am happy to announce the launch of a consultation on the draft of our national technical guideline for metadata.
You will find detailled informati... Read full post

Hello city planners, the idea of open source software is very interesting, but my experience leaves much to be passed directly from ArcGis to QGis and such, because they are structurally different. My project of urban planning is based on a model similar to SimCity, with software GRASS and QGIS with an interface in PHP with a database based on PostgreSQL / PostGIS. I'm doing a lot of research and I'm experimenting with different techniques, but there are few examples, it seems to me to surf the s... Read full post

inspire conference, annex ii & iii testing
This year Richard, Debbie and I headed to the 2011 INSPIRE Conference in what turned out to be a sunny Edinburgh. Snowflake has had a stand for the last 3 years and this year was no exception. Aside from our stand Debbie was running an INSPIRE: Back to Basics workshop and Richard was talking about the work our partner Epsilon Italia has been doing within the EU Nature SDI programme - leaving me to kick back - I mean work the stand and network.
What is INSPIRE?

This joint work reflects on the use of Semantic Web languages for geospatial Web Service compositions in comparison two the classical mainstream Business Process Execution Language (BPEL). We particularly considered the Web Service Modeling Ontology (WSMO) as a tool for implementation. WSMO provides the European counterpart to the American OWL-S, it proved powerful in general web service executions and we revealed drawbacks in handling large amounts of geospatial data.
