Das GeoPortal.Bund erlaubt es, dezentral gehaltene Geodaten aus unterschiedlichen öffentlichen Einrichtungen zu visualisieren. Der Nutzer kann somit gefundene Geodaten auf interaktiven Karten im Internet anschauen und diese beliebig kombinieren (Basisviewer, Expertenviewer).

GeoPortal.Bund wurde in Kooperation von Bundesamt für Kartographie und Geodäsie (BKG), Fachdatenanbieter des Bundes und der Firma ProDV (Dortmund) entwickelt. Unter anderem wird das GeoPortal.Bund als Plattform für Modellprojekte der gemeinsamen Initiative von Bund, Länder und Kommunalen Spitzenverbänden zum Aufbau der GDI-DE genutzt. Mit dieser breiten Kooperation wird der Anforderung Rechnung getragen, nach dem Prinzip „Einige-für-Alle" Projekte des IMAGI mit GDI-Initiativen der Länder und Kommunen sowie mit bestehenden eGovernment-Vorhaben (hier BundOnline) abzustimmen.

GeoPortal.Bund is an internet application which provides access to geo-webservices and distributes geodata of public institutions. The user of the Geoportal can search for specific geodata, visualize and combine them as thematic maps.

GeoPortal.Bund was developed by cooperation of Federal Agency for Cartography and Geodesy (BKG) with data-providers of the Federal Government and ProDV Company (Dortmund). Among others, the GeoPortal.Bund is used as platform for pilot projects of the common initiative of the Federal Government, the "Länder" (States) and the Associations of Municipalities for the implementation of the german SDI (GDI-DE). Through cooperation on this broad basis the requirement is met that projects of the IMAGI be harmonized with the SDI initiatives of the "Länder" and Municipalities as well as with running eGovernment projects (in this case BundOnline), in accordance with the principle "some for all".
