Mashup Idea

Protected Sites in the Full Profile also contain the protected entities, being the species or habitats found within the site. Wouldn’t it be interesting to try and access existing PS test services, but turn around the focus to the species, i.e. the user selects a species and all available sites listing this species as a protected entity are highlighted. This could then be further linked with an online species reference such as Encyclopedia of Life (www.eol.org).

Any thoughts on this?

Hello Kathi - first of all thank you for opening the threads on this group...please apologise if response time is not the fastest: this is a new initiative and we need a little tuning on communication ;)

Concerning your specific idea: it seems interesting to me...concerning the link with EOL: would you have an idea on how the link is to be accomplished ?

Hi Andrea,

ok, our idea is fairly primitive, goes as follows:

the user sees a map of Europe with all (available) Protected Sites visible. On the left is a list of protected species. When the user selects a Species from this list, all sites with this species available as a protected entity are highlighted:

screen1

next to each species name there is the Encyclopedia of Life (EoI) Logo: EoI

When this is pressed, a new window is opened displaying information from EoI on the selected species, i.e.:

Lupus

While it’s pretty simple, I believe it does show the use of INSPIRE linked with other related services. What do you think?

Hi Kathi - yes, this is a simple yet effective idea, and many thanks for articulating it further.

I would figure that some more brainstorming may suggest some reporting functions, in addition to the plain link to the species, so let's see how the idea brews.

Hi all, I am Santiago Higuera, from Spain.

I've read  the idea from Kathi.

I take a look on the API's doc of EOL site:

 http://www.lifedesks.org/apis/

http://wiki.github.com/dimus/gni/api

I need think about.

We will speak..

Hello.

I have been investigating.

To access a page of eol :

http://eol.org/pages/3014669

Looking for a term:

http://eol.org/search?q=mamut

Searching in the GNI

http://gni.globalnames.org/name_strings?search_term=mammut

I can't see geo information. ¿how to locate species in the map?

Salut.

Hi Santiago,

well, i'd go at it backwards, use Species Location information as should be provided for INSPIRE protected sites and link to EoL for further information on this species.

EoL is just species information, with a bit of distrubution stuff gleaned from GBIF data, but if we can link it to distribution data already available it would have added value!

Hi Kathi and others.
I have and idea about how to do this:

The web site is LOCSPECIES. It manage the location of species.
We have a database with species and locations. Each location can be a GIS.Polygon or a set of GIS.Polygons.
Each specie has an Id and we can take information about at EOL.
We have a map and users can view locations, view information about species, add locations, add species,....

There is an option with raster data for locations.....

Hi Santiago,

question - is it possible to access this data via a service? To my understanding the idea behind this exercise is to see how we could make use of various services available on the web to show the power of INSPIRE. At the same time this is also our problem, as the closer we look the harder it gets to provide WFS services in accordance with INSPIRE :(

Any Ideas???

:)

Hi kathi.
If a service exists, LOCSPECIES can read it.
LOCSPECIES must have data about locations of species. It can serve these data across a web site with a pretty map or as a service via request, there is no problem on that.
My question is : Does service exist with the locations of species?
If not, LOCSPECIES has not data and we need to load data about locations into the application. We can do this via direct input across the web site or with a service request.

Salut

Hi all,

ok, the colleagues from SAZP have performed some interesting miracles:
http://globus.sazp.sk:7777/geoserver/www/ps_mashup/index.html

for details on the implementation, either attend the Mashup Workshop on Tuesday, 22 June 14-18 at the INSPIRE Conference in Krakow or check back here later

Hi all,

ok, here some more details:

WFS for protected Sites:
http://globus.sazp.sk:7777/geoserver/wms?

WFS for protected Sites:
http://globus.sazp.sk:7777/geoserver/ows?service=wfs

Soon to come - installation package for GeoServer, set up your own WFS and let us link it to the mashup - or, if you prefer, we can host your data within our server

:)
