In response to the unprecedented economic crisis of the 2008-09, the European Commission formulated its long term vision in the Europe 2020 strategy which emphasizes actions around three main priorities: (i) smart growth: developing an economy based on knowledge and innovation, (ii) sustainable growth: promoting a more resource efficient, greener and more competitive economy, and (iii) inclusive growth: fostering a high-employment economy delivering social and territorial cohesion.
This strategy – especially its two flagship initiatives ‘Digital Agenda for Europe’ and ‘Innovation Union’ – created new perspectives for open co-creation of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) products; amongst others also in geospatial and environmental informatics, which are traditionally both technology-oriented domains. In parallel, both public and private organizations involved in INSPIRE, standardization, and data sharing projects and initiatives find themselves faced with the need to create new forms of cooperation with others in order to share experiences, and solutions for implementing information infrastructures.
Throughout the last year, we found – amongst others, via activities in the European funded ENVIROFI project – an increased interest of the open innovation ecosystems and living laboratories communities. Apparently, several similar discussions have been initiated, also talking about possibilities for co-creating and testing geospatial technologies with potentially affected stakeholder networks at multiple administrative scales. One of these initiatives relates to the establishment of an innovative geospatial test platform to support educational and research activities in the field of geographic information science & technology. Also in European countries similar initiatives are emerging. We see a strong need to connect the interested parties in order to define a shared strategy and build common grounds for future dialogues.
This group provides a forum for information and discussion around the above mentioned matters.
